Sam H My dad used to play Lili Marleen on harmonica. I made a point to learn to play it on the day he died. Now I whistle it to my kid when he needs a tune. Favorite track: Song 08: Lili Marleen.

about

ALL DONATIONS WILL GO TO SUPPORT THE CONTINUING LINKS BETWEEN OUR TWO HISTORIC CITIES. Thanks for your support.

------------

This Street piano was wheeled on a handcart around Bath and surrounding towns and villages in 1945, to raise money for the 'Alkmaar Appeal', a fund-raising effort to help children from that Dutch City badly affected by the impact of the Second World War on the Netherlands.

Bath focused on this one historic city because of its affection for Eli Prins, a Jewish activist from Alkmaar who escaped to the English city and worked there to help the Allies defeat the Nazis. As a result, a firm bond of civic friendship was established which continues today.

In 1945 the instrument was presented to City of Alkmaar as a token of aiding friendship, and has been on display in the Town Hall there ever since.

To mark 75 years since the end of the War, the instrument has been loaned back to Bath, as a reminder of the friendship which continues between the two cities.

Bath came to know about Alkmaar because Jewish activist, Eli Prins, escaped from Alkmaar and lived in Bath during the War.
